BCS’ polymer and biocide chemistries play a major role in the products you may be using every day! I asked our sales rep, Bob Corn, if he could give an explanation on how we show up in these household and institutional applications.
“The Home, Industrial & Institutional (HI&I) cleaning market is a major segment of the global specialty chemicals and cleaning products industry. It includes products designed for household use as well as cleaning and sanitation solutions used in industrial facilities and institutional settings such as hospitals, schools, restaurants, and office buildings. Common HI&I products include laundry detergents, hard surface cleaners, disinfectants, floor care products, and dishwashing formulations. Growth in the HI&I market is driven by increased awareness of hygiene and sanitation, stricter public health standards, and rising demand for effective cleaning solutions across both residential and commercial sectors.
Formulating effective HI&I cleaning products requires balancing performance, stability, and safety. Many formulations contain complex mixtures of surfactants, builders, fragrances, dyes, enzymes, and specialty additives. Maintaining stability within these mixtures is a key challenge, as certain ingredients can separate, settle, or agglomerate during storage. To overcome this issue, formulators rely on additives such as polyacrylate polymer dispersants.
Polyacrylate polymer dispersants are widely used in HI&I cleaning formulations to maintain the uniform distribution of suspended particles and other ingredients. These polymers function by adsorbing onto particle surfaces and creating electrostatic repulsion between particles, preventing them from aggregating or settling out of solution. As a result, the formulation remains stable and consistent over time. This stability ensures that the product maintains its intended performance, appearance, and shelf life from the moment it is manufactured to when it is used by the consumer.
In addition to improving formulation stability, polyacrylate dispersants also enhance cleaning performance. During the cleaning process, soils such as dirt, grease, and particulate matter are lifted from surfaces by surfactants. Polyacrylate polymers help keep these soil particles dispersed in the cleaning solution, preventing them from redepositing onto fabrics or hard surfaces. This function is particularly important in laundry detergents and hard-surface cleaners where effective soil suspension and removal are essential for optimal cleaning results.
Biocides represent another critical component of many HI&I formulations. These agents are used both to preserve the product itself and to provide antimicrobial activity on treated surfaces. Because many cleaning products are water-based, they can be susceptible to contamination by bacteria, mold, and yeast during manufacturing, storage, or consumer use. Without proper preservation, microbial growth can degrade ingredients, create odors, and reduce product quality. Biocides prevent this contamination, helping to maintain product stability and safety throughout its shelf life.
In certain HI&I applications, biocides also serve as active ingredients that control harmful microorganisms on surfaces. Disinfectants and sanitizers used in healthcare facilities, food processing environments, and institutional settings rely on these agents to eliminate bacteria, viruses, and fungi that can pose health risks.
Together, polyacrylate polymer dispersants and biocides play complementary roles in HI&I formulations. Dispersants support formulation stability and soil removal, while biocides ensure microbial control both within the product and on cleaned surfaces. Their combined use helps manufacturers deliver effective, reliable cleaning products that meet the performance and safety demands of modern hygiene standards.”
So next time you’re washing dishes or running your laundry, consider how polyacrylates and biocides may be your household chore assistants.
